Humic substances play a vital role in soil fertility and plant nutrition. Humic substances are natural products that are formed after the biological and chemical decomposition of organic matter over a long period of time (thousands of years), as a result of which humus is separated from non-humic substances (such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins and amino acids) by natural decomposition in the soil.
Humates are a natural activator for plant development. When they enter the soil, these substances stimulate the "work" of soil microorganisms, therefore the very structure of the soil improves, as well as its water and air permeability.
In most cases, humic acids are extracted from peat using an alkaline medium. After it is cleaned from various impurities, the solution is neutralized, and at the end, a granular or liquid version of the fertilizer is prepared.
In addition to humic acids, humates contain: copper, zinc, molybdenum, manganese, cobalt, boron, organic compounds, the molecules of which contain carboxyl and amine groups, sugar, natural antibiotics.
What is the benefit of growing currants?
Blackcurrant seed oil is used to lower cholesterol. It is also used for high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis. Berries and juice are used for glaucoma. It is also used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, colds, etc. Redcurrant is actually a tiny "superberry". It has a low content of fat and calories, but is rich in fiber and necessary vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which are of key importance for youth, good health and maintaining health. Unlike red currants, white currants are best eaten fresh. Golden berries are wonderful not only in the form of a healthy dessert, they contain a lot of pectin, have a beneficial effect on the quality of blood and help to remove harmful salts of heavy metals from the body.
It is best to plant shrubs at the end of August at the beginning of September. When the planting material was purchased at the end of September, you should focus on the weather conditions. When autumn is predicted to be warm, then currants can be planted even at the beginning of October. The root system of the bushes continues to develop until the beginning of winter. It is only necessary to mulch the soil of the planting area. When cold weather is expected, the best option is to plant shallowly, cover the roots of the bushes with earth in a horizontal position until spring. And already with its beginning to plant them.
What to feed currants? Potassium humate is used to feed currants not only during flowering, but also after, but everything must be done according to the instructions. The effectiveness is noticeable both in the taste qualities and in the size of the berries - sweetness and fragrance are guaranteed (especially in the cool, rainy summer season). These currant fertilizers can be used as a supplement to organic fertilization and allow to activate the synthesis of chlorophyll, to grow a healthy plant with a powerful root system.
Benefits of potassium humate:
- Adding to weakened soils helps to increase their fertility
- The vitality of plants increases.
- A strong root system develops.
- There is an increase in the cationic exchange fluid and the assimilation of nutrients is improved.
- The synthesis of chlorophyll increases.
- The similarity of seed material increases.
- Beneficial microbial activity is stimulated.
- The very structure of the soil and its ability to hold water improves.
- Potassium humate for currants naturally chelates trace elements in alkaline soils and increases their availability for planted crops.
Currant bushes should be fertilized to improve their growth. Bushes are fed several times per season:
- with the onset of spring;
- at the stage of appearance of flower buds;
- 6-7 days after flowering;
- during the ripening period of berries.
Manufacturers produce potassium humate in various forms, while they guarantee the effective effect of each option:
- Dry preparation. It is applied in bulk directly into the soil. Especially convenient on large plots of land.
- Liquid concentrate. Small bottles. A particularly profitable purchase for owners of small plots.
- Paste. A profitable option from the point of view of finances. Before use, the paste is diluted to a liquid state. A sufficient amount of concentrate will be obtained.
- The gel is the latest development, the approach in application is similar to the previous version.
How to dilute potassium humates for currants, creating mixtures for watering and spraying:
- if the capacity is 10 l, take 50 ml of humate;
- 200 l - 1 l.
When is potassium feeding blackcurrant or redcurrant feeding recommended?
Seedlings are soaked before planting
This procedure has an incredibly beneficial effect on germination, protects against various diseases and supports the strengthening, development, and ripening of berries.
The solution for this process is created as follows: dilute 100 ml of potassium humate in 10 liters of water. The whole process takes place 24 hours before planting in the soil.
Feeding in the spring season
During this period, feeding should promote rapid growth and the appearance of new shoots, which will subsequently increase the yield.
In the early spring period, as soon as the snow has melted and the danger of new frosts has passed, currant buds: it will be immediately visible - which shoots have survived the winter successfully, and which should be removed. It is then that the same moment comes when currants are fed in the spring. The procedure is repeated again at the end of April so that the bushes bloom powerfully and have a high set of fruits, at the beginning of May - if the planting site is more northern.
Feeding for currants in the flowering phase
Currant feeding in the summer in the form of watering and spraying is carried out in order for the plants to develop healthy and strong, and the main flowering was abundant.
Currant feeding after fruiting / in autumn
Without potassium, the berries are sour and small. Even a well-chosen variety will not show all its qualities without feeding.
Top dressing of currants in autumn, in fact before the strongest frosts, is mandatory several times (50-60 g per 1 square meter of the site). The last feeding will increase the plant's resistance to cold and frost.
Fertilizer rates and time of treatment of currant bushes with potassium humates
Culture | Development phase | Fertilizer rate |
for soaking seedlings, use 300 ml of the product per 100 liters of water | ||
| all types of currants | before flowering | 2 liters per hectare |
| 21 days after flowering | -//- | |
| at the initial stage of fruit ripening | -//- | |
How to prepare a working solution?
Everything happens according to the scheme - 2 liters of potassium humate per 300-500 liters of water per hectare.
Foliar treatment is recommended to be done together with urea (5-8 kg/ha) and plant protection products. Before use, it is recommended to check the drugs for compatibility - perform a test preparation of the working mixture. When mixing, the solution should not precipitate, a slight change is allowed. Drip irrigation is carried out with a 0.01-0.03% solution of the drug.
A few useful tips to get an excellent harvest of currants:
- In order for currant bushes to grow quickly and bear fruit perfectly, they must have the opportunity for constant renewal. Old branches must be replaced by new ones, that is, basal shoots, so-called replacement shoots.
- A slightly deepened and sloping landing allows you to create favorable conditions for forming a bush with a wide base. Underground buds from the buried part of the stem give high growth.
- Each bush needs a "spacious home", in other words, currant seedlings should be planted no closer than one meter from each other
- Useful nutrition for currants with a special mixture based on starch.
- Regular watering for currants is mandatory.
- It is necessary to monitor the health of the bushes - cut off affected plants and all their parts, and treat the plant with hot water from a watering can, especially after wintering.
